You have to shoot your shot in pro wrestling, and former WWE Superstar Baron Corbin (now Bishop Dyer) has done exactly that.
The Last Time Is Now Tournament has taken WWE by storm, and considering it would determine John Cena’s final opponent, it’s not surprising that it’s the top angle in wrestling currently.
The 16-man tourney will also feature some stars who aren’t employed by WWE, and many have already thrown their names in the hat, with the latest being Dyer.
Bishop Dyer Pitches WWE Return To Face Gunther In The Last Time Is Now Tournament
Throughout his 12-year run in WWE, the former Baron Corbin faced several top names, but none were probably as big as John Cena.
In addition to having multiple house show matches, the former NXT star was also deeply entangled in a story with the future WWE Hall of Famer. Cena was the reason behind Corbin’s failed Money in the Bank cash-in, as the two would also have a match at SummerSlam 2017.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bishop Dyer recalled his rich history with the reigning Intercontinental Champion and admitted he’d entertained the possibility of going back to WWE for the ongoing tournament.
I had a little, like, spark in my heart going, man, how cool would it be if I was the guy that didn’t work there right now that was in the tournament? And just the opportunity to go into it. And you know, John [Cena] and I have a ton of history, you know, from him costing me the Money in the Bank briefcase to our match at SummerSlam, and we’ve wrestled a billion times and promos against each other. There’s already a history,” he said.
The 41-year-old star is also sensible about his expectations and does not want to win the tournament. Rather, he is more interested in having a clash with Gunther, who will face Je’Von Evans in a first-round match next Monday.
Taking into account Corbin and Gunther’s wrestling styles, the former United States Champion imagined having a very hard-hitting affair if WWE did make that call to him.
He continued:
So, I’m like, man, that would be the coolest thing ever if I were one of the guys who doesn’t work there right now that got the call to be a part of the tournament. Not to win the tournament. Let me go fight Gunther because I’ve never been in the ring with him, and I think it would be a hell of a brawl. We could kick the living sh** out of each other. And it’d be so fun. I would love that.”
Dyer left WWE in 2024 and had several highs and lows in the company before his contract wasn’t renewed. While he is signed to MLW, a one-off return to WWE would be a viable surprise many might not see coming.
