Greg McElroy won the 2010 BCS National Championship as the quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He then played a few seasons in the NFL before hanging up his cleats.
Now, McElroy is one of ESPN’s top college football commentators and color analysts. He’s also a 4.7 handicap with dreams of becoming even better. McElroy was a guest on the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar podcast and discussed his golf game and goals with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.
Like many elite athletes, McElroy has moments where he believes he can be good at golf. But like so many, the game quickly humbles him.
“I do have moments where I’m like, ‘I could be good,’” McElroy said. “And then I have a quick reminder where I pull-hook something, or I three-putt or I putt it off the green and I’m like, ‘I’m never going to be good.’ I’m kind of at the point now where I’m probably as good as I am ever going to be, even though I still in my mind have aspirations of becoming a plus handicap. I don’t think I’m ever going to get there — I’m too meatheaded. But, at some point, I would like to make that goal a reality.”

McElroy is currently working with top swing coach Mark Blackburn, but admits the famed instructor understands that the former signal-caller has a simplistic view of the game.
“He’ll be like, ‘load the club Greg, lay it off,’” McElroy said. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that means.’ And he’s like, ’45, 46 degrees, Greg.’ Like Mark, just let me swing hard. And he finally now has gotten to the point now where he’s like this guy has no idea what he’s doing. He’s going to swing hard. He’s going to be a meathead about it. He’s strong, so we’ll figure it out. He’s got decent speed but he’s probably not going to know where it’s going to go. So, when it comes to club-face control, so overrated in my opinion. Just, see ball, hit ball. That’s what it’s all about.”
