Cindy Xiao secured a seventh-place finish at the Euro Mini Championships in France, while Amber Lemmon finished inside the top 20 and Hannah Saunders narrowly missed out on a similar finish.

The annual tournament in Schiltigheim, saw 10 girls and boys represent England, taking on international players and those from around the French regions. All the players were born in 2012 or 2014 and more than 400 young athletes competed.

Xiao (pictured above) topped her group in three different group stages of the Under-11 Girls, though she did have a sticky moment in the second phase, coming from 2-0 down to beat Kriszta Ungvari of Romania 3-2 (5-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-1).

Xiao then won two knockout round before her run came to an end in the quarter-finals as she lost out to Switzerland’s Emily Wu 3-1 (7-11, 14-12, 11-2, 11-4).

She then lost to Juana Morales of Spain 15-13 in the fifth in the first play-of for positions 5-8, but ended with a victory over Aybige Feride Ustunday of Turkey to seal seventh place.

In the same age group, Bethany Yang made it though to the knockouts, where she was defeated by Morales in the round of 32. She lost her first match in the positional play-offs but then won her last three matches to end in 25th place.

    Amber Lemmon

Saunders and Lemmon both went through three group stages to reach the main draw of the Under-13 Girls, where both were defeated in the last 32 – Saunders having been 2-0 up against Mila Niu of Germany.

Both then won their first positional play-off match in the 17th-32nd bracket, and both were then beaten by Emma Trascu of Hauts de France, before ending on winning notes as Lemmon finished in 20th and Saunders 21st.

In the same category, Assil Sarri went out in the first group stage, though she lost two of her three matches in the fifth. She went into the consolation group stage, where she won three out of four matches to qualify for the knockouts, where she got through the first round and then went out in the last 16.

    Sinan Surensoy

Rishaan Sawant and Sinan Surensoy looked good in the early stages of the Under-13 Boys, Sawant winning all eight of his matches, and Surensoy six of eight, across the first three group stages.

However, they could not get through the fourth and final group stage and dropped into the consolation knockouts, where both went out in the round of 32.

In the Under-11 Boys, Lusio Wen and Sai Prasanna Kumar fought through three group stages, with Prasanna Kumar particularly impressing with seven wins in eight matches.

However, both exited in the fourth and final group stage and had to settle for a place in the consolation main draw. There, Wen went out in the round of 32 and Prasanna Kumar in the round of 16.

Thomas Ellis went out in the second group stage and dropped into the consolation group stage, where he was unfortunate not to earn a place in the next phase as he won four out of five matches but went out on countback.
