David Ortiz wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to troll the New York Yankees after the Boston Red Sox won Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series between the two rivals.
The Red Sox legend took to social media to poke fun at New York following Boston’s 3-1 victory on Tuesday:
Few players in the history of the rivalry have been more of a thorn in the Yankees’ side than Ortiz, who helped lead the famous 3-0 comeback in the 2004 American League Championship Series and consistently proved difficult to retire in key moments.
Even in retirement, the 2004 ALCS MVP is still messing with the Bronx Bombers.
New York had its opportunities to win Tuesday’s contest and take an early 1-0 lead in the series. Starting pitcher Max Fried was largely effective in 6.1 shutout innings, but manager Aaron Boone removed him with one out and nobody on in the seventh.
Luke Weaver gave up three straight hits, the last of which was a two-RBI single from Masataka Yoshida to give the Red Sox the lead for good.
The Yankees also missed an opportunity to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but Giancarlo Stanton, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham all made outs without bringing in a single run.
On the other side, Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet allowed one run and four hits while striking out 11 in 7.2 innings.
Boston will have a chance to sweep its rivals Wednesday in Game 2, and Ortiz will surely be waiting if it does.
