MILWAUKEE — St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn won’t play again this season as he recovers from a meniscus tear in his right knee.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol announced after an 8-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday that they were shutting down Winn for the remainder of the season. Winn, who last played Monday, had been a late scratch from Friday’s starting lineup.

“His hope really at the end of the day was to get back home and play in front of the home fans one more time,” Marmol said. “He was really aiming for that. We were trying to do everything possible to get him there, but it’s just not recovering the same way it was recovering earlier on in the month.”

Marmol noted that Winn’s knee “just wasn’t feeling nearly as good as it has in the past” when the 23-year-old tried getting ready for Friday’s game.

Winn batted .253 with a .310 on-base percentage, nine homers, 51 RBIs and nine steals in 129 games this year. He committed just three errors all season.

Marmol was impressed with Winn’s willingness to try playing through the injury.

“He wasn’t risking anything further, but he continued to show that it’s important to post every day and to play through some stuff. I love the fact that he did. I love the kid. He’s done a really nice job putting together an incredible year, not only defensively, but took strides offensively.”

Earlier in the day, the Cardinals activated second baseman Brendan Donovan from the injured list after he had missed 25 games with a strained left groin. Donovan, who earned his first All-Star Game appearance this season, led off and went 1 of 5 on Friday.

The Cardinals also activated left-handed pitcher John King from the injured list and optioned left-handed pitcher Nick Raquet and infielder Jose Fermin to Triple-A Memphis.

King had been out since Aug. 26 with a mid-back strain. He pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief Friday.
