Bobby Fish and CM Punk faced each other on the October 27, 2021, episode of AEW Dynamite.

While the match went along as planned for the most part, towards the end, Fish received a GTS and was pinned. Although it appeared that he kicked out before the referee could count to three, the official finished the count and declared Punk the winner.

This incident caused the 49-year-old to receive a lot of backlash both backstage and online, with many accusing the former ROH World Tag Team Champion of wanting to go into business for himself. Recently, Fish spoke about the now-infamous match where he revealed that he kicked out as he received an “Iggy” from The Second City Saint, something that he interpreted as a sign for him to kick out.

Bobby Fish Explains The Whole Scenario About AEW Match With CM Punk

Bobby Fish took to his YouTube channel to speak about the match. He stated that he was aware that he was assigned to lose the bout. He then revealed that when he was pinned, CM Punk squeezed his arm or leg to get his attention, an act which is referred to in the business as an “iggy” or “the office.”

Fish then explained how wrestlers use this gesture to get their opponent’s attention, especially when they want them to reverse a move.

    He said:

When the match ended, I was putting Phil [CM Punk] over. In our industry, thatâ€s called ‘doing the job’ or ‘doing the honors.’ You get paid to win or lose, so you go out and do your job. I was set to do that that evening and had planned on it.

In the moment of the pin, he squeezed my arm or my leg. To be honest, it was so long ago, I donâ€t remember exactly what it was. But itâ€s what we call in the industry ‘the Office,’ or ‘Iggy.’ You generally do it to get someoneâ€s attention.

Now, try to picture this. When you do an Irish Whip, thatâ€s when somebody gets whipped to the ropes, and then they come back. Youâ€re both grabbing each other by the forearm, right? It doesnâ€t need to be spoken. From there, if I give you a little squeeze, thatâ€s whatâ€s affectionately known as the Office or the Iggy. All that means is Iâ€m telling you to reverse me.”

He continued that over time, the gesture has evolved, with it being used by wrestlers to thank their opponent. The former ROH World Television Champion stated that the Iggy he received from The Voice of the Voiceless felt like he wanted to get his attention, which left Fish confused about what to do in that moment.

He then stated that, since there was not a lot of time, he simply kicked out and said that the whole situation could have been solved if CM Punk had just performed a GTS on him again and finished the match. The former AEW star then reiterated that, since he did not have time to think, he instinctively kicked out and clarified that he had no intentions of going into business for himself, as he was being accused of:

This has since evolved to mean quite a few things in the industry. Sometimes, when you have a good match with somebody, you give them the Iggy on the pin to let them know you appreciated it, a way of saying thank you. There are different kinds of Iggies, as crazy as that sounds.

But the Iggy I got in that moment felt like he was trying to get my attention. I donâ€t know what it was or why, but in that split second, I had an opportunity to, for lack of a better term, do something or not. It was like, ‘Okay, why is he trying to get my attention?’

Do I let it pass? Or do I do something to change the outcome of whatâ€s happening? There wasnâ€t a lot of time to think about it. So it was do or donâ€t, and I did. What I did was kick out, knowing that if this wasnâ€t what the intention was, he could just pick me up and hit his move again or do whatever he wanted to do.

It was an instance where I didnâ€t have a lot of time to think, so I kicked out. After the fact, a lot of people said I was going into business for myself. I can confirm that certainly wasnâ€t my mindset at the time, but it was what it was.”

Bobby Fish wrapped up the whole incident to being a misunderstanding, which usually happens. He then said the whole situation boils down to how it is handled, adding that he felt that The Second City Saint did not handle it as well as he should have.

    He said:

I guess itâ€s neither here nor there. I didnâ€t do it to go into business for myself. It was a misunderstanding, and misunderstandings happen, especially in any competitive line of work. It comes down to how you handle things afterward, and in my opinion, he [CM Punk] didnâ€t handle things afterward in the best way he could have.”

You can hear Bobby Fish’s comments in the video below:

The Second City Saint has not shared his side of the AEW match. However, with the facts presented above, it does seem like a case of a major misunderstanding from both stars.
