Virat Kohli was dismissed for ducks in consecutive innings for the first time in his one-day international career as Australia beat India by two wickets in the second ODI in Adelaide to clinch the three-match series.

India superstar Kohli, who has scored a record 51 centuries in the format, was pinned lbw fourth ball by Australia seamer Xavier Bartlett following his eight-ball duck in the series opener in Perth on Sunday.

Having retired from Tests and T20s, these matches have been the 36-year-old’s first internationals since India’s Champions trophy win in March and his first cricket at any level since the Indian Premier League final on 3 June.

Though Kohli’s form has dipped in recent years, he scored 218 runs at an average of 54.50 at the Champions Trophy, including 100 not out against Pakistan and 84 in the semi-final against Australia.

In Adelaide he came in at 17-1 in the seventh over, left his first two deliveries outside off stump, advanced to defend his third and was struck in front by his fourth delivery from right-arm seamer Bartlett.

Before the knock he averaged 65 at the Adelaide Oval, with five centuries in 12 innings across formats, and he waved to the crowd on the way off having been given a warm ovation.
