WWE star AJ Lee has some tense history with Stephanie McMahon, which they recently talked about on a podcast.
Back in 2015, the women’s division was still finding its feet in the Stamford-based promotion when it came to screen time and wages. A tweet by Stephanie McMahon, who was in an administrative position at the time, showed support for the speech by actress Patricia Arquette at the Oscars, which talked about equal rights for women. This prompted AJ Lee to post a message on social media directed at McMahon, pointing out the dire situation of the women’s division in WWE.
In a recent episode of What’s Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon, Lee and McMahon talked about the incident quite openly. Lee talked about the issues in the women’s division at the time, and what she was thinking at the time, and said:
“That to me felt, A, like in general I am fairly direct. I try not to be rude, I think a lot of people like ‘Oh I have no filter’ as an excuse for being rude. But I think you can be direct by being very practical. So I felt like it was coming from a practical place to be direct. but also, was a bit, like I ain’t got nothing to lose… And I was champ at the time.”
AJ Lee further talked about how it was necessary to be open about the issues, stating:
“I feel like change doesn’t happen unless there is sacrifice, unless there is, you have to be willing to lose everything to get what you want. And I feel like that in every aspect of life, like you playing it safe doesn’t work. Playing it safe might give you a safe life, but I don’t know if it gives you an exceptional life. And so I felt like that was worth it, and whatever backlash it was gonna be. But I thought you were cool after.”
Stephanie McMahon Thanked AJ Lee For Her Contributions To WWE
Despite what fans may think, Stephanie McMahon was actually quite pleased with the incident and believes it was a necessary step to revolutionize the women’s division.
Speaking on the same interview with AJ Lee, McMahon said:
“And you were champ at the time. So actually you did have a lot to lose… Not only that, but the courage that it took to fight for what you believed in. And you know the fact that you really were a different character, you know, than any type of stereotype. You came in out of nowhere and the audience loved you from the start. I mean they realy did, they just connected with you in such a special and unique way. And I appreciate your directness.”
Today, the WWE Women’s division has some of the biggest stars in the industry and has grown tremendously, with many instances of special attention towards female wrestlers like the Evolution Event and so on.
