AEW Stars Warned About Overusing False Finishes During Their Matches

MVP isnâ€t here to sugarcoat things—especially when it comes to how younger wrestlers structure their matches. With experience in WWE, NJPW, TNA, and now AEW, the veteran dropped some blunt advice on his Marking Out podcast, zeroing in on one of the biggest mistakes rising stars keep making: too many false finishes.

MVP explained that while heâ€s happy to give feedback, itâ€s never about ego or trying to protect his spot—itâ€s about making matches better for everyone. And when it comes to false finishes, less is more.

“If Iâ€m telling you to slow it down and cut some stuff out, itâ€s not because I donâ€t want you to have a good match, itâ€s because I want you to have a better match.â€

He broke down how repeated near falls end up dulling the crowd reaction instead of enhancing it.

“You can hear. The first false finish, ‘OHHHHH!!!!†The second false finish, ‘OHHHHH!!!!†The third false finish, ‘Ohhhh!†The fourth false finish, ‘Ohhh.†You had them, and it takes a while to get that experience and know when to say, ‘Take it home now. Theyâ€re not going to get any higher than this.â€â€

MVP mentioned that overloading matches with false finishes doesnâ€t make the bout more exciting—it actually hurts the moment that should matter most. His advice comes from wanting the younger generation to succeed.

“When I try to give advice, my reason for giving advice is because I genuinely want you to do better. If you do better, we do better.â€

He even revealed that AEWâ€s Kyle Fletcher acknowledged the lesson firsthand after one of his own matches.

“There have been times where Iâ€ve talked to Kyle Fletcher and heâ€s said, ‘Youâ€re right. I heard it.†Donâ€t work against yourself.â€

As MVP prepares to challenge for the AEW Trios Titles alongside Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin, his advice might be exactly what AEWâ€s next wave of talent needs to hear.

Are AEW wrestlers relying too much on false finishes to pop the crowd? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
