Abhishek Sharma Career Overview

Born on September 4, 2000, in Amritsar, Punjab, Abhishek Sharma had been playing cricket from a very young age, like most Indian children. He was also a childhood friend of the Indian Cricket Team Test captain Shubman Gill. The two used to open for Punjab in the U-14.

Sharma was considered a prodigy from a very young age. A fine striker of the ball, he first made his name in the domestic U-16 competitions. He would soon make his first-class debut at the age of 17. Debuts across formats in Punjab came for Abhishek over the next year.

The youngster was also a part of the iconic 2018 U-19 World Cup India squad, along with several players who would go on to play for the senior national team, like Gill, Prithvi Shaw, and Arshdeep Singh, among others.

The same year, he was picked by the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, playing three games in his debut season in 2018. The very next year, he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the franchise that would groom him into becoming one of India’s best young batters.

During the COVID lockdowns, Abhishek Sharma was coached by Punjab and India cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, as the pair worked on some of the young batting all-rounder’s technical issues.

While Abhishek was considered a promising young cricketer for years, he did not have a breakout season. In IPL 2022, he scored 426 runs in 14 matches but did not come into the spotlight. In the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, he was the tournament’s highest run scorer, making 485 runs at an average of 48.5 and a strike rate of over 190.

The very next year, in 2024, Sharma’s breakout IPL season arrived. He, along with Travis Head, formed the best opening duo in the league. He, along with the rest of the SR batting order, not only played a massive role in taking the team to the final but also revolutionized how T20 cricket was seen on the top level.

Also in 2024, Abhishek was picked in the squad for India’s tour to Zimbabwe, where he would get out for a duck on his national team debut in the series opener before making a 100 in the second match of the series.

Since then, Abhishek Sharma has formed an effective opening partnership alongside Sanju Samson as openers for the Indian Cricket Team T20I side, becoming a regular for the team since the 2024 T20 World Cup. The destructive opener has a strike rate of over 190 in international cricket.
