VESTAL, N.Y. – Lehigh volleyball closed out Binghamton’s Bearcat Classic with a pair of 3-0 sweeps Saturday at Events Center. The Mountain Hawks began the day with a 3-0 victory over Fordham, giving head coach Shawn McLaughlin his first win as Lehigh’s leader; and then the Brown and White took down the host Binghamton Bearcats in a tightly-contested 3-0 match.
The Mountain Hawks got 24 kills over two matches from junior Alysia Fingall, while first-year Mary Massias added 18 and senior Natalie Luscomb contributed 15, including a team-leading 11 against Binghamton.
Lehigh finishes its opening weekend with a 2-1 mark.
In its first match of the day against Fordham (1-2), Lehigh grinded out a 27-25 win it set one, and took the second 25-20, before closing things out with a commanding 25-10 victory in the third.
The Mountain Hawks hit .275 for the match including a blistering .524 in the third set.
Fingall finished with 14 kills, with a .500 hitting percentage. Sophomore Abby Felkai contributed 12 assists, 12 digs and four service aces.
Lehigh led by as many as five in the first set before Fordham battled back. The Mountain Hawks scored the final two points to break a 25-25 tie and take a 1-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks trailed by as many as five in set two before storming back and claiming 10 of the final 15 points.
Set three saw Lehigh score eight of the first nine points and never look back as Fingall’s final kill completed the 3-0 sweep.
The Mountain Hawks hit .356 against Binghamton with Luscomb contributing 11 kills off the bench. Lehigh had eight service aces and five total blocks. Junior Olivia Lasee had four blocks. Senior Madison McCartney contributed a team-leading three service aces.
Sophomore Grace Slovensky contributed 19 assists, while classmate Sophia Bond had 15 digs.
Lehigh trailed by as many as three early in set one but came back to take a 15-14 lead that the Mountain Hawks would not relinquish. The Mountain Hawks led by as many as four, ultimately taking the set 25-22.
Set two began as a tight battle with a Fingall kill giving Lehigh a 16-15 lead. Lehigh ultimately won 10 of the final 12 points to claim a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lehigh played from behind for a good chunk of the third set, but never trailed by more than four points. A McCartney kill gave Lehigh its first lead of the set at 20-19.
Binghamton (0-3) fought off three match points to tie the set at 24-24 but Lehigh claimed the final two points, capped by a Fingall kill to take the match.
Fingall and junior Ufuoma Omene represented the Mountain Hawks on the All-Tournament Team.
The Mountain Hawks will play in James Madison’s tournament next weekend with matches agaist Princeton, Bellarmine and host JMU over the three-day event.
