The 1 thing every player needs to be a better ballstriker

Many golfers have come to believe that striving for consistency is unrealistic — that inconsistency is simply part of the game. While there’s some truth to that, the best players in the world prove that a high level of consistency is not only possible but essential to success. These are the habits and principles that everyday golfers should be focusing on, but most don’t know where to start.

While individual setup styles may differ, the fundamentals of a consistent setup remain the same. Every golfer, regardless of skill level, can apply key setup principles to promote their preferred shot shape. Below are the details that tour professionals constantly monitor and fine-tune to maintain their edge.

Setup: The foundation of consistent control of your ball flight

    1. Apply your hands to the club the same way every time (be aware of small changes that can help to add strength or weakness when needed)

    2. Distance from the ball through the bag and how it changes with shorter clubs vs. longer clubs

    3. Ball position as it pertains to the shorter vs. longer clubs

    4. Body positioning as it pertains to the length of the club

    5. Alignment as it pertains to the stock ball flight they are trying to create or a specialty shot they are trying to hit.

    6. Creating a pattern through the bottom of the swing alignments to promote a repetitive flight

    Irons need an intentional process

Less-skilled players often approach their shots without a consistent routine or clear intention. This random approach only reinforces inconsistency as their norm. While it’s true that golf is an inherently unpredictable game, that’s exactly why a consistent process is so important — not an excuse to avoid one.

In contrast, the top players I work with have a clear ball-flight plan for every club in the bag. They know their preferred shot shape and understand how to make subtle adjustments when needed. Ask them to hit their stock shot five times on a launch monitor, and you’ll see remarkable consistency in key impact variables — centered contact, path, face angle, dynamic loft and angle of attack. When those factors are repeatable, so is the ball flight.

Even when called upon to shape a shot outside their usual pattern, these players can adjust with precision. Their ability to control impact conditions gives them dependable command over distance, trajectory, and curve, even in a game where unpredictability is the norm.

Control impact variables with longer clubs

The same principles that apply to irons extend to the driver and longer clubs. Skilled players know their preferred shot shape and how to create it through specific setup positions and swing feels. While perfection is never the goal, their misses are typically smaller and far more manageable.

They consistently manage key impact variables — centeredness of strike, gear effect, angle of attack, face angle and dynamic loft — to produce reliable ball flights, even under pressure. With longer clubs, especially the driver, precise control over these elements becomes even more important.

Although golf is played on inconsistent surfaces with constantly changing conditions, elite players don’t leave anything to chance. Their approach is intentional, disciplined, and refined — designed to bring as much predictability as possible to an unpredictable game.
