A WWE star apparently believed that CM Punk would start a fight backstage initially.
Before returning to WWE, Punk was part of a major controversy in AEW. Reports of backstage fights and real-life heat behind the scenes were common at that time, with The Second City Saint being heavily involved. He parted ways with Tony Khan’s company on tense terms in September 2023 before appearing in WWE.
This had apparently led Grayson Waller to believe Punk was a difficult person to work with backstage, and something similar may happen in WWE as well. Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Waller stated:
I go to NXT last year, and heâ€s [CM Punk] there with Fraxiom watching their match back, giving them some advice. And then Roxanneâ€s there and heâ€s like, ‘Hey, Waller, want to come watch this match?†What do you mean? Heâ€s really helpful backstage, and heâ€s super nice and all this. Iâ€m either gonna be really disappointed that heâ€s softened, and this is the new Punk, and heâ€s just a really nice guy now, or the real Punk is hiding in there, and I want to be the one to bring it out.
Thatâ€s what I want to do. Because itâ€s like, I guess I was ready to fight him backstage. I thought thatâ€s what we were gonna do. I was like this is gonna be sick, like heâ€s gonna start causing chaos, like heâ€s gonna beat gonna beat up little flops backstage again, Iâ€m in dude. But now heâ€s just a really nice guy and very helpful to everyone, helps everyone at NXT and does all this.
Thatâ€s not the Punk that I love. I want to bring it back out, so Iâ€m gonna get that opportunity. Iâ€ve told him to his face, Iâ€m like, thereâ€s gonna be a day where Iâ€m gonna stand across from you with a microphone, and Iâ€m gonna tell you exactly what I think about you, and I want you to tell me exactly what you think about me.”

WWE Star Thinks Fans Haven’t Seen His Best Work On The Main Roster Yet
According to Grayson Waller, his NXT character was much more serious than the one he displays on the main roster.
Speaking in the same interview, Grayson said:
And I think that magic, because I donâ€t think weâ€ve seen NXT Waller on the main roster yet. Iâ€ve had a lot of fun. Iâ€m being very fun, but I donâ€t think theyâ€ve seen how mean I can be, how cruel I can be. When I really lock in on something, like, Iâ€m a different breed, and I donâ€t think Iâ€ve been that recent. Just talking about it right now, I can feel it inside, thatâ€s what I need. If you want to see a different side of me, put me against that guy. Iâ€ll show you the real me.”
It remains to be seen if Grayson Waller will get the chance to do what he wants to do with CM Punk in WWE.
