AJ Styles and John Cena secured their spots in the pro wrestling history books long ago. The rivals turned friends recently locked up for the final time as Cena prepares to retire at the end of this year, and AJ looks ahead to retirement in 2026. Ten days after their last showdown, AJ is causing a stir with remarks on the 17-time World Champion.
The Phenomenal One and The Last Real Champion began their rivalry in June 2016, and have shared the squared circle around 65 times since then. AJ won their first one-on-one outing at Money In the Bank 2016, then won the rematch at SummerSlam. Cena dethroned AJ of the WWE Championship at the 2017 Royal Rumble, then won the SmackDown main event on February 27, 2018 to tie their series of televised singles bouts at 2-2.
WWE returned to Perth, Western Australia on October 11 for Cena’s final match Down Under. He defeated Styles in their televised rubber match after doing battle for just over 27 minutes, in a match that included tributes to several stars, including Chris Jericho, Bray Wyatt, and The Undertaker.
Styles trusts Cena in the ring more than any other opponent or partner, according to AJ himself. One-half of the new WWE World Tag Team Champions recently spoke with The Boston Herald and praised the Cenation leader for his in-ring work. Styles also revealed his mindset during the Crown Jewel match with Cena, and how the legendary grapplers were in the moment.
“Iâ€m not sure there is anyone in the ring I trust more than John Cena. Heâ€s incredible at understanding what the fans need when they need it. Heâ€s even more incredible with the way he treats people. During our match at Crown Jewel, which is the last time weâ€ll ever wrestle each other, I was in the moment. I embraced and enjoyed it – I mean, itâ€s hard not to love what you do when youâ€re having so much fun doing it. People might be surprised to hear this, but for John and myself, it was another match until it was over. Afterward, we were able to reflect on its significance. In the moment, we were doing what we do to entertain people,” AJ Styles said.
AJ Styles And John Cena Deliver Special Match To WWE Fans
AJ Styles and John Cena tore the house down at WWE Crown Jewel in Perth, Western Australia earlier this month. Styles being picked as one of Cena’s final opponents was seen as a telling move.
The Champ That Runs The Camp and The Never-Seen Seventeen wanted to give fans a special match at Crown Jewel. Speaking to The Boston Herald, AJ acknowledged how the match still had a strong buzz one week later, and said he and Cena accomplished their goal of giving something special to the fans.
“Weâ€ve been doing this for decades, this is what we do. The greatest part is it meant a lot to a lot of people. We wanted to give wrestling fans something special, and I think we accomplished that,” AJ Styles said.
AJ Styles had a big night on RAW this week as he and Dragon Lee dethroned Finn Balor and JD McDonagh of the World Tag Team Championship in the 13-minute opener. This is Styles’ second tag team title reign in WWE after he and Omos were RAW Tag Team Champions for 133 days in 2021.
