Konosuke Takeshita has become the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion for the first time after defeating Zack Sabre Jr in the main event of NJPW King of Pro-Wrestling.
The match ended with Takeshita connecting with the Powerdrive Knee to score the victory and claim the top prize in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Sabre Jrâ€s reign came to a close at 106 days, during which he managed to record two successful defenses before being toppled by Takeshita. The new championâ€s rise has been rapid, capped off by his G1 Climax victory earlier this year. Rather than waiting to use his guaranteed title shot at Wrestle Kingdom 20, Takeshita made the bold decision to cash it in at King of Pro-Wrestling — a move that paid off in a big way.
After the match, Takeshita acknowledged that some fans were not thrilled to see him as champion, but he made it clear he was ready for any challenger. Hirooki Goto stepped up immediately to confront him, claiming the next shot at the gold. Takeshita, however, questioned why younger stars were not stepping forward, challenging the next generation to prove themselves against him.
With Takeshita now holding the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, NJPW enters a new era. The question remains whether Goto will be the one to test him first, or if a younger name will seize the opportunity Takeshita is demanding.
