Both Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris and Arizona Cardinals halfback James Conner appeared to suffer major injuries on Sunday, calling into question their availability for the foreseeable future.
For fantasy players, meanwhile, the outlook for Omarion Hampton and Trey Benson became a major talking point.
Hampton was expected to be the main man in the Chargers’ backfield by many even with Harris in Los Angeles, though through two games he only had 72 rushing yards on 23 carries.
He nearly doubled that Sunday, however, rushing for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Denver Broncos. Even more promising for fantasy players is that he added six catches for 59 yards on seven targets.
Because Justin Herbert and the Chargers have been throwing the ball with a lot of success, it’s hard to trust Hampton to be much more than an RB2 for your fantasy team. But he’s now unquestionably the feature back in Los Angeles, and that makes him very valuable going forward.
Benson didn’t seem to seize on his newfound workload with quite the same panache, finishing Sunday’s game with 10 carries for 42 yards while adding three catches for nine yards. He was pretty clearly the No. 2 option in a timeshare with Conner to start the season but like Hampton should be in line for a more featured role going forward.
How productive he is in that role remains to be seen. For now, he’s best considered a very solid flex option who absolutely should be your top waiver priority if he’s available in your league.
