HONOLULU, HAWAII — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team put a nice finishing touch on its participation in the Hawaii Challenge on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles, who played three five-set matches in the first two days of the tournament, completed tournament play with a 25-22, 27-25, 25-17 win over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday in Hawaii Pacific’s Shark Tank.

Cal State LA (3-1) finished the tourney with wins over Chaminade, St. Mary’s and Hawaii Hilo and a tough five-set loss to Hawaii Pacific.

The Golden Eagles got 37 of their 40 kills on Saturday from three returners. Ayjah Landers had a team-high 13 kills, Zuhal Cetin had a season-high 12 kills and hit at .500 percentage and Samarah DaCoud had 12 kills and eight digs.

Cal State LA had a 40-37 edge in kills and hit at a season’s best .310 percentage. Arielle Chandler had 33 set assists for the Golden Eagles.

Both teams had seven blocks and Hawaii Hilo had an 8-7 advantage in service aces.

Cetin had two service aces and a match-high 10 digs. Havannah Vogel and Chandler both had a team-high four blocks.

Cal State LA jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the opening set and held off a late Hawaii Hilo challenge. Hawaii Hilo closed to within 22-19, but kills by Cetin got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20 and Landers converted the set-winner after the Vulcans had staved off two set points.

Cal State LA appeared to have the second set in hand, but Hawaii Hilo scored three straight points after the Golden Eagles held a 24-21 lead. A kill by Landers gave the Golden Eagles another set point at 25-24, but the Vulcans tied it again at 25-25. A block by Vogel and Landers gave the Golden Eagles a 26-25 edge and an ace by Landers gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The third set was tied as late as 16-16, but the Golden Eagles scored six straight points to take command. A service error gave the Golden Eagles the lead and Juliana Speiski served for six straight points. That run included an ace and two kills by Landers and kills by Cetin and DaCoud.

An attack error got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-17 and a block by Vogel and Chandler ended the contest.

Cal State LA will begin play in its own tournament, the Cal State LA Invitational, beginning on Thursday with a match against Simon Fraser at 5 p.m.
