While a growing trend on the PGA Tour has been a move toward high-lofted fairway woods near the top end of the bag, Callaway knows there are also alternatives.
With the company’s new Apex Utility Series, Callaway is offering three new options that may end up in that sometimes-tricky-to-fit second, third or fourth longest club in your bag.
And of the three options, the third generation of the popular Apex Utility Wood is sure to catch the attention of gearheads.
All three options, including the new Apex Ti Super Hybrid and Apex UT, are designed for players who are looking for a versatile secondary tee option at the top end of their bags. But each of the new clubs is designed to meet a different goal.
Keep reading below for details on all three clubs, who they are for and my thoughts on this new release.
What are the clubs in the Apex Utility Series?
Callaway’s new Apex Utility series consists of three new, distinctive clubs.
2025 Apex Utility Wood
The new Apex UW returned to the original shaping.
Jack Hirsh/GOLF
The highlight of this release for gearheads is going to be the third generation of the Apex UW. The original UW, released in 2021, is still in the bag of many PGA Tour pros, including Xander Schauffele and occasionally Sam Burns. That following wasn’t just limited to the Tour, either.
With the latest release, Callaway has gone back to the original shaping that made the first-generation UW so versatile.
“That was based on Tour player feedback. It was based on market feedback. This one’s an interesting one because there’s kind of a whole following of people who play it. It’s the one that never comes out of the bag,” Callaway Senior Product Manager Zack Oakley told GOLF. “And then you start looking at some of the, some of the nuances and a lot of it comes down to shaping.”
There’s also some new technology, including a new Tungsten Speed Wave and Step Sole design from the Elyte fairway woods. The Tungsten Speed Wave replaces the MIMed weight port of the original version, placing mass low and forward to promote high speeds and launch.
Like the previous versions, the UW also remains a bonded hosel product, which limits most loft and lie adjustments to most consumers, but actually allows for more adjustment on Tour where they have the ability to bend it.
2025 Apex Ti Super Hybrid
The new Ti Super Hybrid takes technology from the popular Ti Fusion irons.
Jack Hirsh/GOLF
With the super hybrid now coming under the Apex brand, the latest model takes after Callaway’s Ti Fusion irons by taking a titanium face and pairing it with a steel body.
“What that allows us to do is have a really lightweight face and then have a more stable body, which is great for generating ball speed,” Oakley said.
The Ti Super Hybrid also incorporates a Step Sole to enhance turf interaction and a deeper face to improve off-the-tee performance.
Apex UT
The Apex UT is a compact, hollow-bodied driving iron.
Jack Hirsh/GOLF
The third option is the Apex UT, the company’s hollow-bodied driving iron platform.
The new UT features new FLEXCORE technology, which is part of a six-piece construction that allows the face to flex more on low strikes, maintaining ball speed and spin.
A classic iron shape helps the UT combo with Callaway iron sets like the Apex Ai150 or similar profiles and is offered in lofts from 2-iron (18˚) to 5-iron (24˚).
Who are these clubs for?
As these are three distinct clubs, they serve three distinct golfers.
The Apex UW is targeted at the high-level player who doesn’t fit well into traditional high-lofted fairway woods, but also doesn’t love hybrids and fears a left miss with them. The low-forward CG of the UW should help produce a neutral ball flight bias and the versatile shape will help it excel over fairway woods of the same loft.
A UW player could also be a higher-handicap golfer who struggles with the length of longer fairway woods and a can take advantage of the ultra forgiving sole and shape.
Similarly, the Ti Super Hybrid is the fairway wood replacement for the higher-handicap golfer, who has a steep angle of attack and needs the ball speeds that a titanium face can provide.
Lastly, the Apex UT is another elite player club, designed for precision off the tee and a low penetrating ball flight.
My thoughts
Just like bringing the X Forged irons to the market earlier this summer, Callaway is once again listening to player and market feedback by returning to the shaping that made the Apex UW a cult favorite.
Xander Schauffele’s original Apex UW and the 2025 version.
Jack Hirsh/GOLF and Jonathan Wall
Some players have kept that original version in the bag for years with no signs of replacing it, but now there might worthy successor.
The UW is a unique club that really has carved out a niche in the market as an option for players who don’t like hybrids for fear of a left miss, but need the versatility for both off the tee and approach play.
The Ti Super Hybrid also occupies this space, but on the other end of the player spectrum for golfers who don’t like fairway woods, but need a secondary option off the tee.
My 70-year-old and still single-digit handicap father struggles with a steep angle of attack, making hybrids a more attractive option for him, but with his speed, he really needs the large size and forgiveness of fairway woods. The UW or Super Hybrid (or both) could be great options for a player like that.
For me as a high-speed player, I’m also really excited to do more testing with the UW to see how it performs next to my existing hybrid, which I have to put lead tape on the toe of to avoid the left miss.
Lastly, the new UT offers a great option for players seeking a driving iron that won’t balloon in high winds and could make a great addition to the bag for trip to the UK.
