Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wants to see more from one of his stars moving forward.
After Jalen Carter’s first real appearance of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Fangio pointed out an area of improvement for the defensive tackle.
“I think he needs to round into better shape, both he and I have talked about that,” Fangio told reporters. “He readily admits that and I think we’ll get more.”
Carter’s 2025 campaign got off to a rough start as he was ejected from the Eagles’ season opener against the Dallas Cowboys for spitting on quarterback Dak Prescott before the first snap of the game.
Carter has also been nursing a shoulder injury that has limited how much work he could get in before the season.
“There’s a lot of reasons for that,” Fangio said. “He has had a shoulder issue that has limited his time on the practice field. The shorter practices that we do, the lack of reps that he’s gotten for multiple reasons, all of that.”
Carter is coming off a season in which he logged 42 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod and even received Defensive Player of the Year votes as he helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl.
Carter’s importance to the Eagles is evident, but the defensive tackle seemingly has some work to do if he wants to maintain his status as one of the league’s top defensive tackles.
