WWE Reportedly Reviving A PLE After 24 Years

Stars from TNA made a massive impact on WWE NXT this week, and it looks like things have only just begun.

Back in 2001, the “Invasion” was a memorable storyline that lasted for many months, involving several huge WCW and ECW names who had joined WWE after Vince McMahon had bought over his rival wrestling promotions. A pay-per-view itself was produced with the same name.

In a recent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), WWE has made an application to trademark ‘Invasion’ after the September 23 episode of NXT.

The official description of the USPTO filing made by WWE for ‘Invasion†was as follows:

Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing sporting events in the field of wrestling for wrestling fan club members; organizing social entertainment events for entertainment purposes for wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the field of sports entertainment.”

Is WWE Planning To Revive The Invasion Storyline?

The main event of the September 23 episode of NXT was a Winner-Takes-All match between NXT Champion Oba Femi and TNA World Champion Trick Williams.

Throughout the show, TNA talents were seen lurking around after tweeting their displeasure the week prior. They eventually ended up getting involved in the main event, leading to an all-out brawl to close the show. This appears to be the beginning of a long-term storyline.

According to BodySlam via Patreon, WWE is discussing a PLE or TV special involving both TNA and NXT, which would be a throwback to WWF and The Alliance, and the pay-per-view held under the same name.
