World Athletics Championships: USA dominate table again as GB suffer worst finish since 2003 | World Athletics Championships

Team USA continued their domination of the World Athletics Championships as they finished top of the medal table in Tokyo.

The US topped the table in total medals won (26) and gold medals (16). Kenya finished second in those two categories with 11 total medals and seven gold. Jamaica, a traditional powerhouse at the championships won the third-most medals (10) but only one gold. Canada finished third in terms of golds, with three.

The last time a nation other than the US topped the medal table at the championships was in Beijing in 2015, when Kenya and Jamaica won seven golds each, with the US managing six. However in the US media, countries are usually ranked by total medals rather than gold, and the US won the most overall medals in Beijing with 18 compared to Kenyaâ€s 16.

This yearâ€s edition in Tokyo was disappointing for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, who finished without a gold for the first time since 2003 in Paris. It was also just the second time since 1983 that the British team have failed to win a gold. The team ended 21st in the table in Tokyo, GBâ€s worst finish since Paris in 2003.

Australia finished 14th in the table with one gold and three bronze, slightly below their tally from 2023 when the team won one gold, two silver and three bronze.

The host nation, Japan, won just two bronze medals and zero golds. Samoa made history, though, with Alex Rose winning bronze in the discus for the countryâ€s first-ever medal at the championships.
