WHL Roundup: Dean, O’Neil lead Oil Kings to win over Rebels

Dylan Dean and Andrew O’Neil each had a goal and assist as the Edmonton Oil Kings beat the visiting Red Deer Rebels 4-1 in Western Hockey League action on Saturday.

Lukas Sawchyn and Josh Lee also scored for the Oil Kings, who outshot the visitors 43-21.

Samuel Drancak scored for the Rebels, who trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 heading into the third.

The Oil Kings went 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Rebels were 1-for-6.

LANGLEY, B.C. — The expansion Penticton Vees, who were shutout 5-0 by the Victoria Royals on Friday in their first-ever WHL game, bounced back Saturday with a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Giants at Langley Events Centre.

Brittan Alstead and Brady Birnie each had a goal and assist for the Vees, while Ryden Evers, Chase Valliant and Diego Johnson added singles. Morgan Tastad chipped in with two assists.

Ryan Lin scored for the Giants, who trailed 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 heading into the third.

The Giants outshot the visitors 22-19. The Vees went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Giants were 0-for-1.

WARRIORS 9, WHEAT KINGS 7

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Landen McFadden had two goals and three assists as the Moose Jaw Warriors scored six times in the third period to beat the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 9-7.

Pavel McKenzie, Riley Thorpe, Owen Berge, Ethan Semeniuk, Casey Brown, Colt Carter and Nolan Paquette all scored once for the Warriors, who outshot the visitors 37-34.

Luke Mistelbacher, Grayson Burzynski, Nicholas Johnson, Caleb Hadland, Jordan Gavin, Joby Baumuller and Easton Odut scored for the Wheat Kings, who led 5-3 after two periods. George Pantelas chipped in with three assists.

CALGARY, Alta. — Shane Smith scored twice and added an assist as the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes blanked the Calgary Hitmen 3-0.

Luke Cozens also scored twice for the Hurricanes, who led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 heading into the third period.

Netminder Koen Cleaver made 27 saves to record the shutout. Eric Tu stopped 29 of 32 shots in the Hitmen’s net.

Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Jett Lajoie had two goals and an assist. Brock Souch had a goal and two assists, and the Prince George Cougars rolled over the visiting Portland Winterhawks 7-2.

Carson Carels, Kayden Lemire, Lee Shurgot, Dmitri Yakutsenak and Jordan Duguay also scored for the Cougars, who led 3-1 after the first period and 6-1 heading into the third.

Nathan Free and Jordan Duguay scored for the Winterhawks, who outshot the Cougars 32-28.

The Cougars went 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Winterhawks were 1-for-4.

SASKATOON, Sask. — Brayden Klimpke’s goal at 1:25 of overtime lifted the Saskatoon Blades to an exciting 3-2 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders.

Rowan Calvert scored twice in regulation time for the Blades, who took a 2-0 lead into the third period.

Brayden Dube scored twice for the Raiders and Aiden Oiring chipped in with two assists.

The Raiders outshot the Blades 26-22 and both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — JP Hurlbert scored three goals and Isa Guram had a goal and two assists as the Kamloops Blazers beat the visiting Spokane Chiefs 6-4.

Cooper Moore and Owen Cooper also scored for the Blazers, who were outshot 33-25.

Coco Armstrong, Gavin Burcar, Mathis Preston and Rhett Sather scored for the Chiefs, who trailed 5-2 heading into the third period.

The Blazers went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Chiefs were 1-for-3.

SILVERTIPS 4, WILD 3 (SO)

EVERETT, Wash. — Nolan Chastko scored in the sixth round of the shootout to lift the Everett Silvertips to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Wenatchee Wild.

Zackary Shantz scored three goals for the Silvertips, who trailed 3-0 midway though the second period. Jesse Heslop added two assists.

Luka Shcherbyna scored twice for the Wild, while Dawson Seitz netted a single.

The Silvertips outshot the Wild 64-28 but had difficulty with visiting goaltender Tobias Tvrznik, who made 60 saves.

The Wild led 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 heading into the third.

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Bryce Pickford scored twice and added an assist as the Medicine Hat Tigers beat the visiting Regina Pats 5-2.

Jonas Woo also scored twice for the Tigers, while Kade Stengrim added a single. Noah Davidson chipped in with two assists.

Zachary Lansard and Ellis Mieyette scored for the Pats, who were outshot 41-23.

The Tigers led 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 heading into the third.

THUNDERBIRDS 6, AMERICANS 3

SEATTLE, Wash. — Simon Lovsin scored twice and added an assist and Matej Pekar added four assists as the Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the visiting Tri-City Americans 6-3.

Brock England also scored twice for the T-Birds, while Sawyer Mayes and Antonio Martorana added singles. 

Jesse McKinnon, Jakub Vanecek and Dylan LeBret scored for the Americans. Cruz Pavao and Jake Gudelj each chipped in with two assists.

The Americans outshot the Thunderbirds 34-31.
