West Indies head coach Daren Sammy hopes that his side can emulate New Zealand’s historic Test series win in India from last year when they play the Asian giants on their own turf next month.
Shubman Gill’s Team India will begin its home season with a two-match Test series against the Roston Chase-led West Indies.
The two-match IND vs WI Test series will be played from October 2 in Ahmedabad and the second Test will be hosted in Delhi from October 10. India will then tour Australia for white-ball matches before hosting South Africa for a couple of Tests.
India have lost their last two Test series: 3-0 to New Zealand at home and 3-1 to Australia away.
The 3-0 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand last year was a tragic and embarrassing defeat for Rohit Sharma’s team, ending India’s 12-year unbeaten Test series streak at home.
Sammy has let out plenty of words of confidence before departing for India, asserting that his team is capable of repeating New Zealand’s heroics in India during IND vs WI Test series.
“We’re definitely going down there with the mindset to win. We’re not just going to go down there and think, ‘oh, it’s India’. No. New Zealand went there and did incredibly well and that we should take inspiration from. But again, it’s understanding the things that New Zealand did in those conditions and try to emulate it with our guys as well,” Sammy said in a press conference on Friday.
While New Zealand conquered India with their variety of spinners, Daren Sammy reckons West Indies’ pace attack has the firepower to pick up 20 wickets on Indian pitches.
“The ability to take 20 wickets, because that’s what you will need in India. If you can’t take 20 wickets in India, you are on the back foot and we have a bowling line-up of that, especially from the seam department, that could take 20 wickets,” Sammy emphasized.
The West Indies recently lost a home Test series to Australia, but their pacers made huge waves. Their fast bowling department comprises Alzarri Joseph, Anderson Phillip, Shamar Joseph, and Jayden Seales, with all-rounder Justin Greaves in support. Their spin department is limited to skipper Roston Chase and the uncapped Khary Pierre.
