Vince McMahon Allegedly Said “He Sucks†When Chris Benoitâ€s Name Was Suggested for a Title Run

Chris Benoitâ€s in-ring legacy has always sparked debate, but Ken Anderson just dropped a story that adds a twist to Benoitâ€s standing behind the scenes in WWE—straight from the mouth of Vince McMahon himself.

In a recent interview with Elite Wrestle Talk, Anderson talked about Benoitâ€s work ethic, intensity, and how his own self-critical nature mightâ€ve cost him big in the eyes of the WWE boss. According to Anderson, Paul Heyman once suggested that Benoit should be given a championship run—only for Vince McMahon to shut it down with a brutally cold comment.

“There was a story once… Paul Heyman told me. They were looking to put the title on somebody new, and Paul threw Benoitâ€s name out there. Vince was like, ‘But he sucks though.â€â€

Heyman apparently had to step in and remind Vince who he was talking about.

“Paul was like, ‘Are we talking about the same guy? Chris Benoit?†Vince goes, ‘Yeah, every time he comes back, he beats himself up. Heâ€s always saying, it sucked, it sucked, it sucked.â€â€

Anderson believes that Benoitâ€s self-deprecating attitude gave Vince the wrong impression entirely.

“In Vinceâ€s eyes, if you say you suck, then you suck. Paul had to convince him—‘No, he doesnâ€t suck. Heâ€s just really hard on himself.â€â€

Ken also explained how intense Benoit was in the ring—always pushing for realism, always demanding more, and never satisfied with mediocrity.

“He was very, very intense. ‘Bring your shIt, because Iâ€m gonna bring mine.†And if something minor got messed up, heâ€d beat himself up over it.â€

Benoitâ€s dedication to the craft was unquestionable. Yet even that wasnâ€t enough to override Vinceâ€s brutal first impression. In a company where image and presentation are everything, Benoitâ€s humility may have cost him more than anyone knew.

Do you think Vince McMahon was too quick to judge Chris Benoitâ€s abilities—or was Benoitâ€s intense personality just too much behind the curtain? Drop your thoughts in the comments below—we want to hear what you think.
