The US Open men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was delayed by 30 minutes because of extra security measures put in place for President Donald Trump’s visit.
The match was scheduled to start at 14:00 local time in New York (19:00 BST) but was pushed back because of huge queues outside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Security has been ramped up at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center, with airport-style scanners erected overnight outside Ashe.
“As a result of the security measures in place, and to ensure that fans have additional time to get to their seats, we have pushed the start time,” US Open organisers said in a statement.
Trump is returning to Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2015.
The president was seen at about 13:45 local time when he emerged from a hospitality suite at the back of the lower tier.
In a stadium sparsely filled with fans, he raised his hands towards the spectators below him.
Trump reappeared – to relatively warm applause – shortly before the US national anthem began in the pre-match ceremony.
There was a mixture of cheers and jeers when he appeared on the big screen.
On Saturday, US Open organisers asked broadcasters not to highlight any negative reactions to Trump during the final.
