AEW News: Tony Khan open to women’s Continental Classic

Tony Khan is “very open” to the idea of AEW holding a women’s Continental Classic in the future.

The men’s Continental Classic first took place in 2023 and has already become a highlight of the AEW calendar. It’s been confirmed that the men’s tournament will be back later this year with the finals expected for Worlds End. While the introduction of a women’s tournament doesn’t sound imminent, Khan thinks it would be a great thing for AEW once circumstances allow.

Radio station Q93 in New Orleans asked Khan about potentially introducing a women’s Continental Championship.

“We’ve got the Women’s World title and the TBS title. I think the Continental would certainly be something very, very interesting,” he responded. “We had some injuries happen in the women’s division earlier this year, at the All In pay-per-view in Texas.

“I think it would be a great thing if we get the division healthy where we’ve got all of our top fighters ready to go. That could be a really great thing. You know, that’s a very intense tournament with matches every week. It’s hard-hitting. Last year we actually had an injury on the men’s side. One injury when you have a tournament like that can change everything. So I am very open to it, especially if we can get all the top wrestlers healthy to compete.”

Eddie Kingston and Kazuchika Okada were the winners of the first two AEW Continental Classic tournaments. Though Okada has unified the Continental Championship with the International Championship, the separate lineage of the belts are still ongoing.

Khan has also given a similar answer in regards to AEW establishing Women’s Tag Team titles, saying they will be put into play when the roster is healthy and can put its best foot forward. Despite any injuries, he believes the AEW women’s division is having its best year ever in 2025.
