The Latest On WWE Changing Vince McMahon Created Event Names — Report

Is WWE really looking to change the names of its premium live events that were created by Vince McMahon?

Last week, TKO President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Shapiro appeared on The Main Event with Andrew Marchan. During the appearance, Shapiro suggested that WWE needed to move past the Vince McMahon premium live event names that have made the company famous.

“And yet, theyâ€re open to new ideas,†Mark Shaprio said. “They never seem exhausted. Theyâ€re ready to take on a new shot, a new risk, a new opportunity. ‘Hey, Nick, letâ€s talk about launching a new event.†Right now, a lot of our PLEs were created by Vince McMahon.

“We need to get in the business of taking that torch and moving past that, and Nick (Khan) and Triple H created Wrestlepalooza, which is the launch event for our new ESPN deal, which did incredibly well and may turn into a superfranchise. Not to mention from a merch standpoint, I donâ€t need to tell you, securing the I.P. rights and then selling merch at Wrestlepalooza, letâ€s just say it was a real winner…†[H/T: Fightful]

Despite his comments, it doesnâ€t sound like WWEâ€s big tentpole events will be changing names anytime soon.

Events like WrestleMania and Royal Rumble arenâ€t going anywhere

According to Fightfulâ€s Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select), a WWE higher up informed him that this change in philosophy would be more towards the basic monthly premium live events and not tentpoles such as WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, or SummerSlam.

The same higher up supplied Sapp with the following quote:

“Saudi Arabia isnâ€t paying for Wrestlepalooza, theyâ€re paying for WrestleMania, and the value of that name and brand is the reason for that.â€

The WWE higher up also made sure to remind Sapp that both New Orleans and Indianapolis have future WrestleMania and SummerSlam events committed to them, although the specific dates of these events have yet to be announced.

Stay tuned to WrestleZone for more information as it becomes available.
