The Ashes 2025: England needed to show ‘fight’ – Michael Vaughan

England failed to show fight in the final session of the third day of the Ashes Test, said former captain Michael Vaughan.

Having conceded a first-innings lead of 177, the tourists were 45-0 at the dinner interval, but collapsed to 134-6 by the close.

“Surely as a team you’ve just got to think ‘just fight’,” said Vaughan.

“You’re under lights at Brisbane and you’ve got an hour and 10 minutes to go. You’ve seen the way that Australia grafted and grafted earlier in the day when they wanted to get to this stage.”

England lost Ben Duckett shortly after dinner, but reached 90-1 before losing five wickets for 38 runs, with Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope both chipping return catches to Michael Neser before Joe Root, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith all edged behind.

“How many sporting teams have you seen play just one way and have success over a period of time? Against quality, against good opponents?” asked Vaughan.

“Occupy the crease and it gets easier. It’s not always the case that you go out there and it’s perfect and you’re hitting the middle of the bat.

“In those situations you’ve just got to scrap and stay in and over time, you start to pick the ball up a bit quicker, you get used to the conditions, the bounce, and all of a sudden you start to find your flow.”

Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, both on four, will resume on Sunday with England still needing 43 runs just to make Australia bat again.
