Seidler family to explore strategic options for San Diego Padres

The Padres released a statement on Thursday announcing that the Seidler family would explore its options as owners of the team, including a potential sale of the franchise.

“The family has decided to begin a process of evaluating our future with the Padres, including a potential sale of the franchise,†chairman John Seidler said in the statement. “We will undertake this process with integrity and professionalism in a way that honors Peterâ€s legacy and love for the Padres and lays the foundation for the franchiseâ€s long-term success. During the process and as we prepare for the 2026 season, the Padres will continue to focus on its players, employees, fans, and community while putting every resource into winning a World Series championship. We remain fully committed to this team, its fans, and the San Diego community.â€

The Seidler family has been part of Padres†ownership since 2012, as part of the group that bought the franchise for $800 million from previous owner John Moores. Ron Fowler served as executive chairman from 2012-20, before Peter Seidler, who had been one of the teamâ€s lead investors during those eight years, took over as the teamâ€s control person following the ‘20 season.

Seidler served in that role for three years before his death in November 2023, and the team remained owned by his family afterward. Seidlerâ€s business partner and minority owner Eric Kutsenda spent one season as interim control person, before Seidlerâ€s eldest brother, John, was named chairman prior to the 2025 season.

During the Seidler familyâ€s tenure as owners of the Padres, the club has reached heights that it never previously reached. San Diego has reached the postseason in four of the last six years and is coming off consecutive 90-plus-win seasons for the first time in franchise history.

The Padres have spent the past several seasons shattering franchise attendance records. This year, 3,437,201 fans attend 81 home games at Petco Park, including 72 announced sellouts. Both were club records — and an indication of the Padres†deep ties to the San Diego community and their successes under the Seidler familyâ€s ownership.

The team again figures to contend in 2026 with a roster full of superstars and a new manager — Craig Stammen, who was introduced earlier this week — at the helm. The statement noted that Padres ownership would put “every resource into winning a World Series†in ‘26, while exploring a potential sale.

The specifics and timeline of the process are largely unclear. In its statement, the team said it would employ BDT & MSD Partners to guide the process. Beyond that, the statement noted: “The Seidler family and the Padres do not intend to comment further until the process has concluded.â€
