In a social media post on Wednesday, the 38-year-old framed the decision as both closure and renewal:

“They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”

Ashwin thanked the franchises he represented, CSK, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, alongside the IPL and BCCI. With an economy over career of 7.20, and a useful 833 runs with the bat, he embodied the adaptable all-rounder.

Integral to Chennai’s triumphs in 2010 and 2011, Ashwin reunited with the franchise in 2025 but endured a modest season, taking seven wickets in nine appearances.

Ashwin earlier had asked CSK for clarification regarding his future with the franchise. Even in his recent interaction with multiple cricket personalities, especially with Sanju Samson and Rahul Dravid, Ashwin never mentioned calling it a time from the biggest T20 league in the world.

Few Indian cricketers embodied the tournament’s evolution quite like him: inventive, cerebral, and always restless for fresh contests. The IPL chapter now closes; the itinerant phase begins.
