Mohan Bagan Gets Brazilian Forward Robinho

Mohan Bagan Gets Brazilian Forward Robinho: Mohun Bagan Super Giant have signed Brazilian forward Robson Azevedo da Silva, better known as Robson Robinho. The multi-year deal comes ahead of their AFC Champions League campaign next month.

Mohan Bagan Gets Brazilian Forward Robinho: Who Is He?

The 30-year-old arrives from São Paulo’s state championship club EC Agua Santa, but is best remembered in South Asia for his prolific spell at Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings. He had scored 64 goals and provided 49 assists across 97 appearances for Kings. He finished as the Bangladesh Premier League’s top scorer in 2020-21, helping the club to multiple domestic titles.

“The wait is over. The Samba is back in Kolkata,” Mohun Bagan declared in their unveiling on social media. Robinho himself spoke of the move as a return of sorts, recalling past encounters: “I have played against Mohun Bagan when I was with Bashundhara Kings. I knew then that it’s India’s most successful club… I hope to bring the same success here.”

The Brazilian is expected to feature when Mohun Bagan open their AFC Champions League group-stage campaign against FK Ahal on September 16. His versatility, able to play wide, as a No.10, or in a front two, makes him a likely replacement for the departed Greg Stewart, while also adding depth to a strike force already boasting Jason Cummings and Jamie MacLaren.

Reports suggest rivals East Bengal also showed interest, given Robinho’s past connection with their current manager Oscar Bruzon. But Mohun Bagan moved swiftly to secure the deal, underlining their intent to reinforce ahead of a continental campaign where goals will be at a premium.

For the Mariners, whose ambitions stretch well beyond the ISL, Robinho’s signing is more than just another import. It is a statement, that Asia’s biggest stages demand players with both pedigree and presence.
