The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team swept Troy 3-0 on Tuesday, September 13 for their third straight win.
“After a challenging start to the season, the girls are settling in and playing more and more as a team,” first year head coach Jeff Zuchowski said. “Our defense is so much improved from week one, and it’s starting to show in the win/loss column. Our volleyball skills will get stronger every day, but I’m proud of the way we’re beginning to treat each other both on and off the floor. If we can figure that out, the sky’s the limit for our team this year.”
Wellsboro cruised to a 25-13 first set win before hanging on to win a competitive second set, 27-25. Wellsboro finished the game with a 25-18 win in the third set.
Senior Maddi Bordas scored a season-high 20 points and also recorded 13 assists and 8 digs to lead the Lady Hornets. Junior Meredith Brownlee scored 6 points, had 6 kills, and 11 digs, junir Natalie Cleveland had 16 digs and 7 points, and sophomore Lexi Urena had 5 points, 7 assists, and 9 digs. Senior Emily Starkweather also added 8 digs, 3 kills and 4 points and sophomore Paige Logsdon added 8 kills.
In the JV game Troy won 2-1, beating Wellsboro 25-19, 21-25, 15-10, dropping Wellsboro’s record to 3-4.
The win in the varsity game improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 5-2 (2-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back on the court on Thursday, September 15 at Towanda.
