Kurt Suzuki Reportedly Interviews for Giants' Managerial Opening After Bob Melvin Exit
Former MLB catcher Kurt Suzuki interviewed Friday for the San Francisco Giants’ managerial vacancy, FanSided’s Robert Murray reported.
The news comes four days after the Giants announced former manager Bob Melvin’s dismissal after two seasons.
Suzuki played for five clubs through 16 seasons in MLB from 2007 to 2022. He has spent the last three years working with the Los Angeles Angels as a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian.
Perry’s brother, Zack Minasian, was promoted to serve as the Giants’ general manager ahead of the 2025 season.
Suzuki earned an All-Star nod with the Minnesota Twins in 2014 and won a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019.
He retired in 2022 after two final seasons with the Angels, then transitioned to the club’s front office.
Although Suzuki has no previous managerial experience, his recent work as an MLB catcher could potentially make him a strong candidate for the Giants.
The San Francisco Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser noted earlier Friday that president of baseball operations Buster Posey, who starred as the Giants’ catcher for 12 seasons between 2009 and 2021, has a pattern of considering recently-retired catchers for leadership positions.
Slusser noted that the club interviewed former Giants catcher Stephen Vogt, now manager of the Cleveland Guardians, as a managerial candidate before hiring Melvin in 2023.
According to Slusser, former minor-league catcher and Guardians associate manager Craig Albernaz is also “likely to get a look” amid the Giants’ search for a new manager.
Posey initially said after Melvin’s dismissal on Monday that the Giants are “looking to find a different voice that can take us in a different direction.”
That likely won’t involve a reunion with former Giants manager Bruce Bochy. Posey told reporters Wednesday he doesn’t expect to pursue Bochy, who recently parted ways with the Texas Rangers, as a candidate.
