Kings surprise-reveal new third jerseys ahead of season-opener vs. Avalanche

As if a season-opener wasn’t intriguing enough, the Los Angeles Kings opted for even more theatrics.

The L.A. club surprised its fans by revealing new third jerseys ahead of the Kings’ matchup against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night, with no prior heads up.

Fans got their first on-ice look at the new threads when Anze Kopitar — to start his final NHL season — walked out of the tunnel for player intros at Crypto.com Arena, after the team warmed up in their usual home uniforms.

The Kings posted a detailed look at the jerseys on social media, accompanied by the caption, “Proud to wear Our Crown.”

Their latest alternate jerseys are inspired by the team’s original look from 1967, featuring a silver and black crown emblem in the middle. Players will also sport silver chrome helmets to complete the ensemble.

The Kings’ new sweaters mark the ninth iteration of their third jerseys, as Los Angeles was part of the NHL’s initial launch of the Third Jersey Program for the 1995-96 season with their “Burger King” jerseys, famously sported by Wayne Gretzky.

L.A.’s previous third jerseys, which they wore from 2021-2024, were primarily white with black and silver stripes and also featured chrome helmets.

As for the surprise reveal, it appears to be the second time the franchise has unveiled new jerseys in such fashion. In 2008, the Kings warmed up in their usual black and purple home uniforms but then switched to their now iconic “home plate” jerseys for puck drop.
