King reaches assist milestone for Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS – Setter Jovial King (SO, Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia HS) reached a career milestone with her 1,000th assist, leading the Augsburg University volleyball team in a split of two matches in the first day of action at its Augsburg Invitational on Friday at Si Melby Hall.

AUGSBURG 3, UW-LA CROSSE 1

• King set another career-high in assists, recording 49 assists in the four-set match, adding eight digs and three block assists.

• Augsburg hit .205 as a team (58 kills, 25 errors in 161 attempts) in the match, while limiting UW-La Crosse to a .000 effort (31 kills, 31 errors on 140 swings). The Auggies also combined for 10 team blocks and had 10 service aces in the victory.

• Outside hitter Ava Carlson (FY, Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) recorded a double-double, with 16 kills, 12 digs and a service ace.

• In the middle, Elizabeth Oster (JR, Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) set a new career-high with seven blocks (one solo), while tying a career-best with 13 kills.

• Taliah Triggs (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) had 10 kills with four digs and two blocks. 

• Marley Mitchell (SO, Nevis, Minn./Nevis HS) and Gwynn Gorter (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) had three block assists each.

• Libero Maggie Lile (JR, Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove HS) claimed a career-high seven service aces, adding 24 digs.

MINNESOTA MORRIS 3, AUGSBURG 2

• Carlson led the way for the Auggies with her 10th career kill-dig double-double and fourth of the season, scoring a career-high 19 kills, with 17 digs and three service aces.

• The match was a back-and-forth affair, as the visiting Cougars rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two-point wins in the fourth and fifth sets. The match featured 16 ties and six lead changes. Minnesota Morris claimed 15 service aces, as the Auggies had an .837 receiving percentage in the match.

• King had her fourth 40-plus assist performance of the season, with 40 assists in the nightcap, giving her 1,062 assists in her three seasons as an Auggie. She added three ills, three service aces, nine digs and two blocks against the Cougars.

• Triggs set a season-high with 12 kills, to go along with five digs.

• Marley Mitchell (SO, Nevis, Minn./Nevis HS) recorded seven kills, with three blocks (two solo).

• Elizabeth Oster (JR, Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) had five kills with a block assist.

• Lile had 17 digs in the match.

FOR THE FOES

• Grace Nommensen had 12 kills, 19 digs and four block assists to lead UW-La Crosse.

• Ella Johnson led Minnesota Morris with 11 kills, 18 digs and a block assist.

• Augsburg finishes its home tournament on Saturday (9/6) with a match against Lakeland University (Wis.) at 12:30 p.m. and Grinnell College (Iowa) at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
