John Cena Explains Logic Behind Brock Lesnar Destroying Him

John Cena explains the thought process that went into the infamous squash match against Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam 2014.

The main event of SummerSlam 2014 saw John Cena defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Brock Lesnar. The Beast completely manhandled Big Match John, delivering one of the most one-sided outings in company history.

After taking multiple trips to “Suplex City,†Cena fell to Lesnarâ€s match-ending F-5 for the closing bell. Brock would remain champion until WrestleMania the following year, when he dropped the title to Seth Rollins after the “heist of the century.â€

John Cena reflects on WWE SummerSlam match against Brock Lesnar

During a recent interview with The Ringerâ€s Bill Simmons, John Cena went into great detail explaining why he lost to Brock Lesnar the way he did at WWE SummerSlam 2014.

“Iâ€ve been in all sorts of stories,†Cena said. “When youâ€re told, ‘Hey, Iâ€m the good guy, youâ€re the bad guy. You have four minutes on television, and the purpose of our four-minute commercial is to make John look unstoppable,†the way you can do the best for me, for you, and for the match is to bump like a madman and lose.

“A flip scenario of this is the famous Suplex City match with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam after he defeated The Undertaker. How does one follow breaking the streak — the most mythical thing in sports entertainment that a lot of us thought would never end — and this beast breaks it? And Iâ€m up next. How do we follow that?

“So how do we make this guy, who won this huge thing, definitely not a fluke? If I went out there and had a 50/50 performance with Brock Lesnar — Brock Lesnar is capable of making anyone look fantastic, by the way — but that wouldnâ€t help Brock, it wouldnâ€t help the story, and it wouldnâ€t help all of us.â€

John Cena on the purpose of SummerSlam match

“The purpose of that match was to get Brock Lesnar over strong on our most cherished, strong, and believable intellectual property. If he can beat The Undertaker, heâ€s a beast. If he just destroys John Cena, I want you uncomfortable and looking over to your shoulder at your friend being like, ‘Who the f is going to beat this guy?â€

“And along comes somebody like Roman Reigns. Finally — he can do it. Those moments… you leverage that SummerSlam, that single-serving packet.â€
