Golden Eagles Sweep Past Wildcats In Chico

CHICO — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team ended its first California Collegiate Athletic Association roadtrip with a three-set win at Chico State on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles, coming off a come-from-behind five-set win over Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday, won in three sets for only the second time this season in a 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 win over the Wildcats in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (6-3, 2-0 CCAA) hit at a robust .343 hitting percentage in the victory.

Samarah DaCoud had 14 kills and four blocks and hit at a .444 hitting percentage, while Ayjah Landers also had 14 kills with four blocks and hit at a .303 percentage. Zuhal Cetin had five kills and four service aces for the Golden Eagles.

Maria Wahl had a team-high seven kills for Chico State (4-5, 0-2 CCAA).

McKinley Chase had 17 set assists and nine digs for the Golden Eagles, while Madison Clark had a team-high five blocks.

A strong serving run by Cetin erased a 4-2 deficit and put the Golden Eagles ahead, 8-4 in the opening set. Cal State LA led the rest of the way, although the Wildcats closed to within 16-14 and 18-15 before the Golden Eagles pulled away. A kill by DaCoud and a block by Havannah Vogel and Landers gave the Golden Eagles a 23-16 edge and kills by Vogel and Cetin ended the set.

Cal State LA opened the second set with a quick 6-1 advantage and never looked back. A kill by Rebecca Topete and a block by DaCoud gave the Golden Eagles a 20-10 lead and Cal State LA eventually closed out the set with a kill by Landers and an ace by Cetin.

Cal State LA jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the final set and led the rest of the way. The Wildcats closed to within 20-18, but kills by Landers and Rachel Lowe pushed the lead to 22-18. Cal State LA put the match away with a kill by DaCoud and back-to-back kills from Landers.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a conference home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
