LOS ANGELES — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team came up short on Friday against another nationally-ranked team.

One night after falling to No. 14 Simon Fraser in four sets, the Golden Eagles followed a similar script on Friday, falling short against No. 18 Colorado Mesa, 25-22, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22 in the third of three matches on the second day of the Cal State LA Invitational.

In earlier matches on Friday, Cal Poly Pomona beat Colorado Mesa in four sets before falling to Simon Fraser in four sets.

In both of its tournament matches so far, Cal State LA (3-3) has lost the first set, won the second and then dropped the final two. Colorado Mesa (4-2) jumped out to early leads in the final two sets and held off a spirited Cal State LA rally to prevail in four sets.

Samarah DaCoud had a match-high 17 kills for the Golden Eagles, while Zuhal Cetin had 10 kills and a match-high 14 digs. 

Sadie Scoville and Henley Madsen had 12 kills to lead the Mavericks. Colorado Mesa had good balance with Emma Luce contributing 11 kills and Kaitlyn Hall chipping in with 10 to give the Mavericks four players in double figures.

Havannah Vogel had five blocks and two kills for the Golden Eagles, while McKinley Chase had a team-high 16 assists and seven digs.

Colorado Mesa had a 55-44 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .213 – .139. The Golden Eagles had an 9-8 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA did not record an ace and had eight service errors, while Colorado Mesa had seven aces and nine errors.

After dropping the opening set, Cal State LA jumped out to a 11-7 lead before the Mavericks erased that gap and took an 18-16 lead. The Golden Eagles, though, scored the next four points on a kill by DaCoud, back-to-back kills from Cetin and a kill by Rebecca Topete to take a 20-18 lead. After the Mavericks tied it at 20-20, two kills by Cetin and two attack errors got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20. The Golden Eagles eventually closed out the set on a kill by DaCoud.

Colorado Mesa jumped out to an 18-10 advantage in the third set and scored the final six points of the frame to earn a 25-13 decision and a 2-1 sets lead.

The Golden Eagles fell into an early 8-3 hole in the final set, but got to within 8-7 after a block by DaCoud and Vogel, a kill by DaCoud and an attack error. Colorado Mesa then built an 18-12 lead before a block by Vogel and Ayjah Landers, a kill by Oluwatoyin Sunday, a block by Sunday and a kill by DaCoud to make it 18-16.

Cal State LA got as close as 22-21 after kills by Cetin, Landers and a block by Landers and Madison Clark and 23-22 after a kill by Landers, but Colorado Mesa got the final two points and closed out the match.

The Cal State LA Invitational will conclude on Saturday with a pair of matches. Colorado Mesa and Simon Fraser will meet at 2:30 p.m. and Cal State LA will face Cal Poly Pomona in the tournament finale at 5 p.m.
