History

LOS ANGELES — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team was unable to close out a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State Dominguez Hills in the fourth set and the Toros made the Golden Eagles pay in the fifth.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a 12-6 deficit in the final set, but the Toros converted on their fourth match point to post a stunning 25-23, 17-25, 14-25, 28-26, 18-16 upset in University Gym. Cal State LA (14-5, 10-2 CCAA) slips two games out of first place with the disappointing loss and is now just one game ahead of third-place Cal State San Bernardino.

The loss put an end to a 12-match winning streak for Cal State LA against the Toros and was the Golden Eagles’ first loss to the Toros since a four-set defeat in Los Angeles on Oct. 13, 2017.

Samarah DaCoud had a match-high 29 kills and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Ayjah Landers and Zuhal Cetin had 13 kills each.

Bailey Fuchs had 13 kills for Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-11, 4-8 CCAA), including back-to-back kills to finish the fourth set and send the match to a fifth.

Arielle Chandler had 39 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Mariana Alvarado had seven kills and three blocks and Madison Clark had five kills and five blocks.

Cal State LA had a 68-58 advantage in kills and outhit the Toros, .261-.202. The Golden Eagles struggled over the final two sets, though, hitting just .163 in the fourth and .077 in the fifth. Cal State LA had nine aces and 11 errors, while Cal State Dominguez Hills had four aces and 12 errors. Both teams had 11 blocks.

The Golden Eagles started slowly and dropped the opening set before seemingly getting things back on track over the next two sets.

Cal State LA opened up a quick 10-4 lead and never trailed while taking the second set and opened up a 17-9 lead while taking the third.

The Golden Eagles trailed late in the fourth set, 23-20, but got a block from Clark and Landers, a kill by Landers, an attack error and a kill by DaCoud to get to match point at 24-23. Back-to-back kills by Ava Hurry and Fuches pushed the Toros to their first set point and back-to-back kills by Fuchs ended the frame at 28-26.

The Golden Eagles surrendered seven straight points to fall behind, 7-2, and faced a 12-6 deficit before roaring back. Cal State LA got two kills from Cetin and a block by Cetin and Alvarado to close to within 12-9 and then got a kill by Alvarado, an attack error and kills by Clark and Cetin to tie it at 13-13.

A service error gave the Toros a match point, but a kill by Cetin evened it at 14-14. Cal State Dominguez Hills was unable to take advantage of two more match points before taking a 17-16 lead after a kill by Hurry that was originally ruled to have hit the flag for a Cal State LA point. After the officials met and changed the call to a point for the Toros, the call was confirmed after replay and the Toros got another kill by Hurry on the next point to win it.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
