The Calgary Flames will be without one of their young forwards as they try to reverse their early-season woes.
Calgary announced Sunday that Sam Honzek will be out week-to-week after suffering an upper-body injury during Saturday’s loss to the Winnipeg Jets.
Honzek was injured after colliding with Flames teammate Mikael Backlund in the second period. The 21-year-old was skating along the blue line in the offensive end as Backlund dumped the puck into the Jets’ zone before veering into Honzek.
The Slovakian winger ended up taking the worst of the hit, immediately heading down the tunnel before being ruled out by the Flames with an upper-body injury.
Backlund stayed upright on the play and managed to stay on the ice.
To add further insult to injury, the Jets took advantage immediately at the other end, with Mark Scheifele opening the scoring in what ended as a 4-3 shootout win for Winnipeg.
Honzek saw 7:05 of ice time and handed out two hits before leaving the game.
In 18 contests this season, Honzek has two goals and four points for the last-place Flames. Selected 16th overall by Calgary in the 2023 draft, the six-foot-four forward is in his first full season with the team. In 2024-25, he made his NHL debut but played only five games.
