Flames’ Andersson denies rumour he would only accept trade to one team

Rasmus Andersson didn’t appreciate some of the rumours about him this summer.

The Calgary Flames defenceman is heading into the final year of a six-year, $23.7-million contract.

He has been the subject of trade speculation even dating back to the 2024 deadline, when Calgary shipped out fellow blue-liners Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin and Nikita Zadorov.

And after he failed to agree to terms with the Flames last season, that trade speculation has only increased.

But as rumours floated around this summer that he would only allow a trade to one team, Andersson set the record straight at the Flames’ annual golf tournament on Tuesday.

“The thing that bothers you is fake information that comes out. I saw some reports that I would only sign in one team, and this and that,” Andersson said. “I mean, nothing could be further from the truth. (GM Craig Conroy) and I have had a few conversations over the summer, and I would never handcuff him and give him one team.”

He also admitted that after a down season in 2024-25, which saw him record 11 goals, 20 assists and a minus-38, it wouldn’t have been in his best interest to re-sign.

“I’ve grown up in the city, and I’ve loved every second of it, and that will never change,” Andersson said. “And now it’s the business side of it. Is it smart of me to re-sign now after last season? I don’t know. I mean, I’ve read all season how much I suck. So I just got to come out of the gates hot, and just worry about myself and get the team in the best position possible.”

The Swede has spent his entire career with Calgary since it selected him in the second round of the 2015 draft, suiting up in 536 contests and recording 231 points (47 goals, 184 assists).

The Flames missed the playoffs last season before mostly standing pat in free agency. Instead, they devoted their resources to locking up parts of their young core, signing Dustin Wolf, Matt Coronato and Connor Zary to contract extensions.
