EFL Cup: Wrexham v Cardiff – Robin Colwill confident of upset

Rubin Colwill is confident Cardiff City can triumph at Wrexham in the EFL Cup after beating Premier League side Burnley in the previous round.

The pair will meet for the first time in 21 years at the Stok Cae Ras on Tuesday evening (20:00 BST).

Joel Colwill, brother of Rubin, and Callum Robinson scored as the Bluebirds caused a massive cup upset to beat Burnley 2-1 and the older Colwill believes the result has spread confidence throughout the team.

“I think Burnley was really good for us. We played a Premier League team, played really well and beat them.

“That gives us a lot of confidence that we can beat teams in higher leagues than us, not just in League One,” the midfielder said.

The Bluebirds currently sit top of League One, level on points with Stevenage and Bradford City.

A last minute Amario Cozier-Duberry stunner for Bolton meant Cardiff lost their third league game of the season on Saturday. Colwill, however, says the team’s focus has already switched to their all-Welsh encounter with excitement building for the “semi-derby”.

The 23-year-old said: “It’s exciting, they’re a division higher than us now so it adds that extra bit of emphasis on the game. It’s going to be a test, but we’re all looking forward to it.

“It’s probably a semi-derby as it’s a long way away but there’s not many Welsh clubs in the English system. So anytime you come across one it’s always going to be a bit of a rivalry and it’s another Welsh team that we can try and beat.”

The Wales midfielder admits that he has followed Wrexham’s story describing it as “brilliant for Welsh football” and for the people of Wrexham.

But he assures fans that the “story” will make no difference to his team when they travel to north Wales hoping to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals and knock out their Welsh rivals in the process.
