Diamondbacks OF Lourdes Gurriel carted off with apparent knee injury after fall in loss to Rangers

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was carted off the field Monday night after he went down with an apparent non-contact knee injury.

Gurriel was working to track down a deep shot from Texas Rangers first baseman Rowdy Tellez in the sixth inning of a 7-5 loss in Phoenix. Fellow outfielder Blaze Alexander beat Gurriel to the ball and actually made an incredible diving catch for the out to end the inning. But as Alexander went to dive, Gurriel planted hard on his right knee in an effort to get out of the way.

Gurriel’s knee wobbled hard, which sent him crashing down to the outfield. He remained down for quite some time with his head in his hands as teammates and athletic training staff rushed over to help. Gurriel was eventually carted off the field.

Specifics of his injury are not yet known. He’s expected to undergo further testing on his knee on Tuesday, but manager Torey Luvullo said that “it doesn’t look great,” according to Fox10’s Megan Plain.

Gurriel entered Monday night with a .249 batting average with 19 home runs and 80 RBI this season, his third with the Diamondbacks. He did not return, and was 0-for-2 from the plate when he went down.

The game was locked up 3-3 when Gurriel was carted off, though the Diamondbacks added two runs in the bottom of the inning after Alexander hit an RBI triple and Gabriel Moreno hit an RBI double.

The Rangers rallied in the ninth and tied the game up after an RBI triple from Jake Burger and an RBI single from Cody Freeman with two outs. That sent the game into extra innings.

The Rangers then added two more in the 10th, thanks to an RBI single from Alejandro Osuna, which pushed them to the two-run win. The Rangers now sit at 72-67 on the season.

The Diamondbacks fell to 68-71 record and are fourth in the NL West race. They are well back in the wild-card standings and are currently on pace to miss the playoffs for a second straight year.
