Collegiate XC Conference Digest – Track & Field News

Michigan Stateâ€s Riley Hough led most of the Big 10 menâ€s race, yet Oregonâ€s Abdel Laadjel (1296) ran away in the final kilometer to key the Ducks†first conference team win since the â€08 Pac-12. (STEVE UNDERWOOD)

VARIOUS SITES, October 31 & November 1 — Intriguing storylines and questions abounded as the NCAA XC calendar reached conference championship weekend. MEN

The Big 12 showdown between #1 Iowa State and #2 Oklahoma State went decisively to the Cowboys. #1 Brian Masau defended his title in 22:53.7 and the Cowboys packed all 5 scorers ahead of ISUâ€s third man to prevail, 20–43. =#8 and defending conference and NCAA champ BYU was 4th behind #5 Colorado, 87-102.

Robin Kwemoi Bera (3rd) and Joash Ruto (5th) contended for the Cyclones, but their next three were 10-12-13. A week earlier, ISU had announced the suspension of unnamed runners for undisclosed rule violations, reportedly not top 7 runners.

Led by #8 Gary Martin (2nd, 22:39.4), #4 Virginia edged #6 Syracuse, 61–65, for the ACC title. #12 Wake Forest was a distant 3rd at 111, but #10 Demon Deacon Rocky Hansen triumphed with a scorching 22:18.6.

At the Big 10, #10 Oregon received a stunning 23:11.6 triumph from Providence transfer Abdel Laadjel to prevail over #13 Michigan State and 7-time defending champ #15 Wisconsin. =#8 Alabama dominated the SEC with 64 — 59 points up on #20 Georgia. Florida frosh Kelvin Cheruiyot, the Pre-Nats champ, scored a 23:08.3 victory.

#3 New Mexico and #2 Habtom Samuel (1st, 22:32.0) ruled the Mountain West with 26 points, while Pac-12 refugee and #11 Washington State dominated the West Coast Conference with the same tally behind the 1-2 of #6 Solomon Kipchoge (22:32.6) and #4 Evans Kirui (22:57.6).

WOMEN

BYU frosh #6 Jane Hedengren, the Pre-Nats champ in her October debut, crushed the Big 12 field by 45 seconds with an 18:29.6 to #7 Joy Naukot of West Virginiaâ€s 19:14.3. Hedengrenâ€s #1 defending NCAA champ Cougars won decisively with 38 points, ahead of #6 Iowa State (71).

Meanwhile, NCAA defending champ (#2) Doris Lemngole and #1 Pam Kosgei (NCAA 5K/10K champ), both made their fall â€25 debuts. Lemngole rolled to the SEC crown (19:32.37) over Floridaâ€s Judy Chepkoech (19:47.12). Similarly, Kosgei led #9 New Mexico to the Mountain West crown in 19:20.8, more than 20 seconds up on Boise Stateâ€s Kaiya Robertson (19:42.3).

#2 NC State — the â€21-â€23 NCAA champs — flashed its depth and notched 28 points to win the ACC over #5 Notre Dameâ€s 89. Angelina Napoleon (19:13.9) led a 1-4-5-8-10 finish.

But #4 Oregon looms as a growing threat after demolishing the Big 10 field with a record-low 18 points. Led by the 1-2-3 finish of #10 Diana Cherotich (19:31.3), #9 Juliet Cherubet and Şilan Ayyildiz — the Ducks confirmed that they are a serious podium threat. SEC champ Florida, which tallied 45 behind Chepkoech to more than double the score of #25 Alabama, is the other key contender.
