Chiefs’ Andy Reid Optimistic Xavier Worthy Will Return from Injury amid Full Practice

After missing the last two weeks because of a shoulder injury, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy could be back on the field this week.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Worthy was a full participant in practice on Wednesday. Head coach Andy Reid was also optimistic in his assessment of Worthy.

“We’ll just evaluate him,” Reid said, per the Kansas City Star’s Pete Sweeney. “(We’ll) take it day by day, but he feels good, so we’ll see.”

Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers after colliding with tight end Travis Kelce. After the injury, Reid designated Worthy as “day-to-day,” which was “an indication that the plan is to rehab and attempt to play with a brace — rather than immediate surgery,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

He returned to practice on Sept. 11 but was unable to return to action for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 14. There was optimism that he’d be ready to go by Week 3, but he ultimately was still sidelined. Fortunately for the Chiefs, they were still able to get past the New York Giants 22-9.

The Chiefs selected Worthy with the 28th pick in the 2024 NFL draft, and he put together a decent rookie year with 638 yards and six touchdowns. He added 104 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

While he was mostly average during the regular season, Worthy showed flashes of greatness in the Super Bowl. Though the Eagles walloped Kansas City, Worthy collected 157 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions.

The Chiefs are hoping to get that version of Worthy this season, but he’ll first have to return from injury.

Kansas City started the season 0-2 before finally getting into the win column last week. Things won’t get easier this week, though, as the Chiefs will take on Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
