Bayern 5-0 Hamburg (Sep 13, 2025) Game Analysis

Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich warmed up for their Champions League opener against Chelsea by routing Hamburg SV 5-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The result was hardly in doubt from the moment Serge Gnabry opened the scoring with a stunning strike after just three minutes.

Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Díaz were also on target in a dominant display by Vincent Kompany’s champions, who led 4-0 at half-time.

Bayern, with three wins from three, lead the table by two points from Borussia Dortmund. Hamburg are still awaiting their first win and have just one point to their name.

England captain Kane now has five goals already in the Bundesliga this season, the most of any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes prevented a bigger scoreline.

Bayern’s transfer chief, Max Eberl, acknowledged on Friday that he’d prefer to see Israel goalkeeper Daniel Peretz in the Hamburg goal. Peretz joined Hamburg on loan from Bayern in the offseason in the hope of getting more playing time, but Fernandes helped his team to promotion last season and has stayed in coach Merlin Polzin’s favor for their Bundesliga return.

Kompany sent on Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson after the break for his Bundesliga debut, but Bayern’s intensity dropped with the result already clear and Kane had to wait until the 62nd before getting his second goal.

Both sets of fans refrained from chanting and singing during the second half when it was apparent there were two medical emergencies in the stands. The supporters resumed once they got the all-clear.

Bayern host Chelsea on Wednesday, when Jackson will have a quick reunion with his former teammates.

Bayern got off to a flying start as Gnabry took a pass from Konrad Laimer and skipped past a challenge on the right-hand side of the area before lashing past Fernandes from a tight angle.

The hosts doubled their lead six minutes later, with Pavlovic this time finishing with a shot across the keeper after playing a one-two with Kane.

Bayern continued to pile on the pressure, but Fernandes saved from Michael Olise and Díaz. The visitors’ first chance of the game saw William Mikelbrencis shoot at Manuel Neuer.

Kane claimed his first from the penalty spot after 26 minutes after Aboubaka Soumahoro was adjudged to have handled. The former Tottenham striker fired coolly into the bottom corner, just beyond the reach of Fernandes.

Summer signing Díaz claimed the fourth just before the half-hour mark, albeit with the aid of a deflection.

The Colombian aimed a curling shot from outside the area following Joshua Kimmich’s quickly-taken free-kick and enjoyed a stroke of luck as it took a huge ricochet off Luka Vuskovic and flew in.

Bayern could have had more before the break, but Díaz had another effort saved and shot wide before Gnabry fired over, Kimmich missed the target and Olise tested the keeper.

Kane finally added Bayern’s fifth when he received a pass from Olise in the box and took a touch before firing through the grasp of Fernandes from 12 yards.

It was his last significant contribution as he was substituted soon after.

His replacement Lennart Karl forced a save before Jackson and Tom Bischof also threatened for Bayern, but Hamburg escaped further damage.

Information from PA and The Associated Press was used in this report.
